Dr Assumpta C. Nwanya is a Senior Lecturer with the department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She obtained her PhD in 2017 from the same department and University with specialisation in the synthesis of nanostructured materials for applications in photovoltaics and electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors) as well as for gas sensing. Dr Nwanya was the best PhD student of the Faculty of Physical Sciences,2016/2017 academic session and received the 2nd Prize of the Vice Chancellor’s Postgraduate Prize in the same academic session. Before joining the university, Dr Nwanya was a Research Fellow with the National Centre for Energy Research and Development (2008-2016). She was a Postdoctoral Fellow under the UNESCO-University of South Africa (UNISA) Africa Chair in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (2018-2020). She is a research Affiliate with the SensorLab, University of the Western Cape Sensor Laboratories, Cape Town, South Africa. She has successfully co-supervised three masters students with Prof Iwuoha of the University of the Western Cape, South Africa, and currently has more than 5 Masters students under her supervision. She mentors and guides students especially in their research, even those not officially assigned to her. Dr. Nwanya is a Future Leaders African Independent Research (FLAIR) Scholar. The FLAIR Fellowship programme is a partnership initiative of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS), the Royal Society of UK, and the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). The highly competitive FLAIR Fellowship is awarded to top early career researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa who show great promise of becoming future leaders in their fields of specialisation. Dr Nwanya is also a fellow of the Science by Women Foundation (Women for Africa) Spain. Dr Nwanya has attracted quite a few research grants which enabled her to procure some basic nanoscience equipment that both students and staff within and outside the University find handy for their research.
