ABOUT ACE-SPED

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES IN SUSTAINABLE POWER AND ENERGY DEVELOPMENT


Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Power and Energy Development (ACE-SPED), is a World Bank assisted project domiciled in the faculty of Engineering, University of Nigeria Nsukka. The Centre was conceptualized to proffer sustainable solutions to some developmental challenges peculiar to the Sub-Saharan Africa region. These challenges include lack of access to a reliable electric power supply, poor diffusion of renewable and alternative energy technologies, as well as a shortage of high-level skilled manpower to deploy and manage the power supply system.

The fundamental aim of ACE-SPED is to carry out impactful educational research development and training activities in five major thematic areas:


  1. Electric power systems development
  2. Renewable energy, waste-to-energy and energy conservation
  3. Energy resources assessment and forecasting
  4. Sustainable energy materials
  5. Energy policy, regulation and managemen

Using a student-centered, interactive, and engaging educational curriculum cum robust research and development themes with strong practice orientation, ACE-SPED plans to equip it’s Masters and PhD, degree graduates to deliver a great impact on sustainable power and energy development in the Sub-Saharan Africa region. The Centre aim to train skilled manpower to boost electricity generation and distribution in the region (using conventional and renewable energy resources) to support national grids as well as the ECOWAS sub-region power and energy organizations, namely, the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP), the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency(ECREEE) and ECOWAS Regional Reguratory Authority(ERERA) . The centre will also run short courses for personnel of management cadre in energy and power sector as well as for relevant governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations.

To establish a regional hub, focused on addressing the energy and power challenges of sub-Saharan Africa through research, education, and collaboration with sectoral partners.


MISSION

To create a functional, problem-solving Center of Excellence with the capacity to impact meaningfully in power systems and energy development, through knowledge transfer and human capital upgrade.
