Examining The Challenges of Digital Transformation in Higher Education institutions in The Gambia
Research Leed: Ousman B. Jallow
Research Area: Digital Transformation
Digital
transformation has become an essential aspect of higher education institutions
(HEIs) worldwide of which Gambia is not an exception. The integration of
digital technologies in various aspects of education has the potential to
enhance learning outcomes, improve administrative processes, and provide
personalized educational experiences. However, the adoption and implementation
of digital transformation initiatives in Higher Education Institutions come
with several challenges that need to be addressed.
In recent years, the integration of digital technologies into
education has become a transformative force, reshaping traditional teaching and
learning methodologies. The Gambia, as a part of this global trend, is
increasingly recognizing the need to embrace digital transformation in its
higher education sector to keep pace with the evolving educational landscape.
In 2019, University of The Gambia became the first HEI to go for
online classes due to the stoppage of physical classes as a result of covid-19
and since then, almost all other HEIs in The Gambia are offering online
classes.
The Gambia, a small West African nation, faces unique challenges
and opportunities in its higher education sector. With a growing population and
a commitment to providing quality education, HEIs in The Gambia are seeking
innovative solutions to meet the educational needs of its citizens. The
traditional model of higher education is being re-evaluated in light of the
potential benefits that digital transformation can bring, such as increased
accessibility, improved quality of education, and enhanced administrative
efficiency.
The rationale for digital transformation in Gambian HEIs is
grounded in the recognition that technology can be a catalyst for positive
change. Digital tools and platforms have the potential to overcome geographical
barriers, reach a wider audience, and provide flexible learning opportunities.
Additionally, the integration of digital technologies can streamline
administrative processes, making higher education institutions more efficient
and responsive to the needs of students and stakeholders.
The background also acknowledges the global trends and best
practices in digital transformation within higher education. Many institutions
worldwide have successfully leveraged technology to create engaging learning
environments, foster collaboration, and enhance the overall educational
experience. Understanding these global trends provides a foundation for
identifying potential strategies that may be applicable to the Gambian higher
education context.
While recognizing the potential benefits, the background
emphasizes the emergence of challenges that need careful consideration. These
challenges include but are not limited to issues related to infrastructure,
financial constraints, digital literacy, resistance to change, content quality,
data security, regulatory frameworks, unequal access, and coordination among
institutions. Each of these challenges requires a thorough examination to
develop context-specific solutions.
This
research aims to examine the challenges faced by HEIs in the Gambia in their
journey towards digital transformation and explore potentials mechanisms to
overcome these challenges.
